The story

Opened in 2001 in central Gothenburg, Universeum is the largest science centre in Scandinavia. Spread over seven floors, it is part museum, part aquarium and part indoor jungle, built so that visitors learn by doing rather than just looking. Its mission is to inspire young people towards science, technology and a more sustainable future.

What makes it special

  • A living tropical rainforest under glass, complete with free-flying birds, butterflies and a waterfall.
  • Ocean tanks where you can watch sharks swim above your head through a glass tunnel.
  • Hands-on exhibits on space, the human body, robotics and chemistry.
  • A strong focus on sustainability, designed especially for children and school groups.

Plan your visit

Universeum sits next to the Liseberg amusement park and the Museum of World Culture, so it is easy to combine in one day out in Gothenburg. Allow at least half a day — the rainforest alone rewards a slow visit.
